Lost a Cat?
Losing your cat can be a worrying and traumatic time.  We hope the following advice will help to reunite you with your cat.

Please report your cat missing as soon as possible in order to maximise the chances of getting him or her back.  You can ring us on the Branch line, 01524 850112, or email us at lancandmorecambecp@hotmail.com.  If you have a digital photograph of your cat, then please email this to us and we will include it on our Lost and Found Register.  Also contact the local Petsearch by email (margaret@localpetsearch.org.uk), or by telephone 01524 823013 or 822518.  

Make sure your cat isn't hiding or been shut in somewhere inside the home - check cupboards, wardrobes, the washing machine and tumble drier.  Then check outside - in hedgerows, sheds, garages, and vehicles, and ask your neighbours to do the same.  Bear in mind that a cat will travel across gardens rather than along streets, so check around areas that back onto your property.

Produce some flyers and push through letterboxes (with a photo if you can) - put one or two on lampposts or fences as well.  Ask local shops to display a flyer or poster, as well as your local pubs and takeaways where plenty of people will see them.

Contact all the local vets with a description in case your cat is handed in.  Vets (and Cats Protection) will automatically check a stray cat for a microchip and we can then trace the owner very quickly.  Also, if you feel able to, check with your local council as they keep records of all animals they pick up following traffic accidents.  Keep looking on our website (www.lancaster.cats.org.uk) and the Petsearch website (www.localpetsearch.org.uk) to see if a found cat matches your cat's description.

Remember - most cats do turn up, although sometimes many week or months after they disappeared.  When you do find your cat, please inform any organisation that you told so that they know to stop looking.

Found a Cat?
If you find a cat that is hanging around or looking distressed, please contact us on 01524 850112.  You might also consider the following advice:

If the cat appears hungry, please feed it.  Feeding a stray cat for a short while is the kindest thing to do whilst we try and find its owner, and ensures that it won't wander somewhere else where it may be in danger.  

If you can, take the cat to a vet who will check for a micrcochip, and you can ask if anyone has reported a similar cat as missing.  If no microchip is found, you could produce some small 'Cat Found' cards to put in newsagents and local shops.

If the cat appears to be sick, badly injured or distressed, please try and get it to a local vet straight away -  don't just ring us as our telephone is an answerphone and we won't be able to get back to you right away.  Vets will provide emergency medical treatment, they will scan the cat for a microchip in order to try and locate the owner.  They will also contact Cats Protection or one of the other local organisations about the cat's ongoing care.

 
If the cat seems healthy, and well fed, then our advice would be to ignore it as it may just be looking for a change of dinner menu!  If it is still around your house early in the morning, appears wet or dirty, then it may be a lost cat or perhaps a stray.  Of course, if the cat is in a dangerous situation (main roads etc), then let us know and we can advise on providing shelter close to your house whilst we check whether it is a lost cat that may already have been reported to us.  Try knocking on doors locally and put a card in the local shop to see if it belongs to a neighbour.  We can provide a paper collar in case the cat isn't lost at all but lives locally - the collar asks the owner to contact us so we can give appropriate advice.
